Can I Really Get Crowns In A Day? Understanding PlanScan

Dental technology is constantly advancing and enabling dentists to provide patients with more comfort and convenience, and better overall outcomes for dental procedures. One of the most important recent advancements in dentistry is PlanScan technology.

With PlanScan, Dr. Schof can build crowns and other dental restorations in a matter of minutes, and apply them in just a single appointment. At the Mandeville Center for Dental Excellence, it’s possible to get a crown in just a one day. Want to learn more about the process? We broke it down into 5 simple steps to help our patients understand treatment with PlanScan:

Step 1: Initial Tooth Preparation

At first, the process of having a same day crown placed is just like a traditional crown. Dr. Schof will clean and disinfect your tooth, and numb the treatment area. The damaged or decayed tooth enamel is then removed, leaving a clean and flat surface to which the dental crown can be bonded permanently.

Step 2: Imaging of the Tooth

After your tooth has been prepared, Dr. Schof will be coat it with a layer of reflective powder. This powder works with a specialized digital camera to provide a precise 3D image of your tooth. Images of your tooth and the surrounding area are then uploaded to the milling machine.

Step 3: Restoration Design

After the images of your mouth have been loaded using PlanScan technology, the tooth restoration will be designed. Dr. Schof will pick out a porcelain color that’s identical to your existing teeth, and fine-tune the images that were taken by the camera to ensure that the restoration is perfect.

Step 4: Milling

Once your design has been completed, a blank ceramic block is placed into the milling machine. Then, specialized, computer-automated milling tools cut and grind down the material until it’s identical to the design uploaded by Dr. Schof.

Step 5: Restoration Placement

After the tooth restoration has been completed, Dr. Schof will remove it from the milling machine. He will check it for color, fit, finish, and defects. If the dental crown passes inspection, he will use dental cement to bond it permanently into place, completing the treatment.

This entire process takes less than a half-hour. In the past, you would have to wait 2-3 weeks for a dental lab to create your crown and send it back to your dental office. Modern technology at the Mandeville Center for Dental Excellence allows you to get a crown in just a single appointment.
