PlanScan Vs. CEREC – What’s Better For Same Day Dentistry?

If you’re interested in same day dentistry or CEREC in Mandeville, you may be wondering what options you have. There are two primary competing same day dentistry technologies in use today. PlanScan and CEREC.

Both of these advanced technologies allow doctors such as Dr. Charles Schof to manufacture dental crowns, veneers, and other restorations in just a single dental appointment. However, they are not identical. At the Mandeville Center for Dental Excellence, we use PlanScan, rather than CEREC technology. Here is what you need to know about these two dental technologies, and same day dentistry.

Understanding Same-Day Dentistry

The process of most same-day dentistry procedures is quite similar, regardless of the specific dental technology used.

First, Dr. Schof will use a hand-held intraoral scanner to scan the inside of your mouth. This scanner takes a 3D digital image of your mouth, and your individual teeth.

Then, these images are sent to a PlanScan CAD/CAM Restoration System®. Here, a digital model of the crown is created, perfectly designed to fit into your mouth. Then, the crown will be created in-house, in just a few minutes.

While your tooth restoration is being crafted, Dr. Schof will clean and prepare your damaged tooth, and get it ready for the installation of the crown. Then, the crown will be checked for fit and proper placement, and adjusted if necessary.

Once the fit is perfect, Dr. Schof will permanently bond it into place with dental adhesive. In just a single appointment, you can get a long-lasting and durable ceramic crown, without waiting for a third-party lab to manufacture your dental prosthesis.

The Advantages of Planscan vs. CEREC

Why have we chosen to use PlanScan over the popular CEREC chairside restoration system? There are a few reasons.

First, PlanScan uses a proprietary ceramic material that has been shown to be harder and more durable than CEREC ceramics in lab tests. This means that your ceramic crown will last longer, and is less likely to break.

Second, we believe that PlanScan is more precise. The handheld intraoral camera is extremely accurate, delivering a tighter fit and better patient comfort when the crown is placed.

Finally, PlanScan is also faster than CEREC for most applications. Using advanced computer technology, renderings and digital images are processed quickly, allowing for a shorter total treatment time, and less time spent waiting in the dentist’s chair!
